B-W Soccer finishes regular season with shutout win

Baldwin-Woodville Junior Megan Hietala played her best game of the season according to the B-W Coach during a 1-0 win over Barron-Cumberland on May 23.

The Blackhawks girls’ soccer program wrapped up the 2019 regular season on May 23 with a 1-0 road win over Barron-Cumberland to improve its record to 3-12.

“From the whistle, the girls continued their confident play from the last two matches,” said B-W Coach Bob Hietala, noting that his team was connecting passes and putting Barron on the back foot most of the match.

“Junior Megan Hietala had her best game of the season,” he said after Megan fired off six shots, including the game’s only goal.

Senior Olivia Kaiser played a ball to Megan, who struck it with force and precision from about 18 yards out. The ball hit the inside of the far post in the top and before slamming into the back of the net.

Barron’s opportunities to answer on a penalty kick and breakaway fell short.

“The Blackhawks played smart and had several more attempts through out the game,” Coach Hietala said, but neither team was able to find the back of the net again.

B-W finished with a 14-6 shot advantage as freshman Olivia Chouinard earned her first shutout behind sophomore centerbacks Trinity Merritt and Juneau Paulsen, who both played the full 90 minutes.
