Milk Cow Prices

At $78 per head, the average price of Wisconsin milk cows last month was at the highest since the summer of 1930, the Crop Reporting Service of the Wisconsin and United States Departments of Agriculture announced today.

A sharp increase in the demand for milk cows began last year when it became apparent that feed supplies this winter would be unusually large for the number of cows then being kept on Wisconsin farms.  The prices of milk cows further increased as milk prices recovered from the low level during the spring and summer months.

At the present prices reported for milk and milk cows, it takes approximately 5,000 pounds of milk to buy a milk cow.
